SPQR (The Sacrilege) is book 3 in the Roman Detective series by John Maddox Roberts. The series follows a young Roman Noble in the last day of Rome’s Republic, who hob knobs with likes of a Pre-Infamous Julius Ceaser, Pompey and the like. In this volume our protagonist finds himself the target in the middle of a group of not so random murders only to find out that it is he who is the target. The book itself is well written and researched by Roberts. Memorable characters both real and fictious encompass a mystery worthy of a read. The addition of Hermes is fun and unpredictable as it gives some diversion for the main character to chafe at.
At a banquet somebody tries to poison Decius Caecilius Metellus and his host, called out to welcome a mysterious visitor, is murdered. What is the connection with the desecration of the rites of Bona Dea by DCM's arch-enemy, Clodius?
A very enjoyable entry in this series. I found the suggestion of what else was going on at Caesar's house that night very ingenious and amusing to contemplate.

Number three in the SPQR series, and Decius Caecilius Metellus is investigating a very political case: what male noble spied on a sacred womens' ceremony in the house of up-and-coming politician Julius Caesar? The story moves from conspiracy to conspiracy, but the trip is eased by a vivid recreation of late Republican Rome, and by a very dry humor.
SPQR series III: the Pontifex Maximus, Julius Caesar, decrees that "Caesar's wife must be above suspicion". Scandal rocks the city when a religious ceremony at which his wife Pompeia presides is corrupted by the presence of a hidden man. The young senator Decius Caecilius Metellus the younger investigates as 4 murders follow. A good historical mystery series.
