When Shawn asks Katherine Townsend to show more be Patrick's nanny while he's on the road, he has no idea how this decision will impact his life. Another perfectly wonderful book from Dan Walsh. This is a prequel to The Unfinished Gift and it follows that story up seamlessly. You learn what happens next in the lives of Sean Collins, his son, Patrick, his father, Ian, his neighbor, Mrs. Fortini, and the young woman from child services who helped Patrick through the loss of his mother, Katherine Townsend. You can't help but grow very fond of each character and hope for the best for each of them. WWII is still ongoing, but Sean Collins, a bomber pilot in the Army Air Force, has not returned to his old duties and is awaiting word if he will be granted a discharge from the military to care for his seven-year-old son. Of course, things don't go as he wishes and he finds himself, once show more again, separated from Patrick. Thankfully, he is able to hire a wonderful nanny whom he trusts implicitly to care for his son. Time has a way of changing lives and this story brilliantly tells how each life is changed and how all of the change is woven together into a beautiful tapestry of faith and love. show less
NCLA Review - The Homecoming takes place during World War II when many men were away from their families. It is a story of three generations (father, son, grandfather) dealing with love, tragedy, grief, and loneliness in a time of sacrifice and love to country. Shawn’s wife dies in a car accident while Shawn is a B-17 pilot serving in England. Shawn struggles to find time for their young son. Beautifully written from a man’s viewpoint it is refreshing to see a sensitive, caring devotion to family life. I highly recommend this book for everyone to read, male or female, teenager through grandparents. It’s hard to set aside this realistic yet irresistible love story. Rating: 4 —BE

Shawn Collins, a WW2 hero, returns home on a leave to grieve his wife who has just recently died in a car accident. He never thought she would be the one to die. Now he is face with the challenge to find someone to look after his seven year old son and his aging father. The army decides to send Shawn on a war bond drive on the east coast of the United States and Shawn asks Katherine Townsend, a case worker who worked with the Collin's family after the death of Shawn's wife to be his son's nanny. The decision turns out to be fortuitous.
Good story about family and friends and being spiritual. Touching at times and real most times because of actual life changing news and world events . Great read and moving.
This book by Dan Walsh was a very easy but enjoyable read. It features a romance with complications, yet you know how it will probably wind up in the end. The characters are good and the plot is normal. Enjoyed it.
