Jag vet inget om författaren Gemma O'Connor, mer än att hon är irländska bosatt i Oxford i England. "Following the Wake" utspelar sig också på dessa platser, om än fokus ligger på en liten ö någonstans i södra Irland.
O'Connor har valt att skildra vad hon tror kan hända inom en familj om en traumatisk upplevelse för en åttaåring förtigs, och han tio år senare börjar minnas. Processen när pojken/den unge mannen börjar minnnas är spännande att följa och skildrad ganska rafinerat. Men beskrivningarna avrelationerna mellan föräldrarna nu, och deras relationer till sina barn och till vänner som var med då, redan för tio år sedan, är mycket ordrik och - i mitt tycke - tråkig. Det känns som man deltar i skvaller show more om någon man vet har det svårt. Mer intressant än så blir det inte.
Så det är lite blandade känslor denna berättelse givit mig. show less
