Media: pencil drawings with color. This is a good example of an informational book because it gives practical information about what happens when people discover treasure. It gives all sorts of information about how the process goes, but it tells it at first in story form, which is why I like the book.
This book is about a boat, Atocha, that sinks during a bad storm. Some of it's sister ships that also sunk were found; however, Atocha was not found. Many people set out to find this ship but they had no luck. Finally, a man named Mel Fisher went searching for the ship that had been lost at sea for hundreds of years. After twenty years of searching, he finds Atocha. He finds all of it's treaures and artifacts, cleans then up, and then displays them for all to see. The Atocha lived on through its treasures and taught many people about it's history. I thought this book was really good because it was kind of like a chapter book. There were different sections throughout the book which I think would help children that were trasitioning into show more chapter books. show less
This narrative story about the sinking and subsequent search for the Spanish galleon Atocha couples lively descriptions with appropriately detailed illustrations. Gibbons takes readers through the history of the galleon’s last voyage, as well as Mel Fisher’s attempts to find the galleon and its treasures. Stuffed with information about the sinking of the ship and methods of discovering a sunken ship, young readers will enjoy this little-known piece of history.
Very good for an older crowd. If the topic is about sea ships or treaure this will be a good book to read. Very exact information and the students will learn a lot of information.
With her trademark clarity, Gail Gibbons presents information about shipwrecks, including famous shipwrecks from history and their (re)discovery.
This book is full of information about sunken treasure: how it got there, how it's found again, how it's preserved. A useful addition to a study on pirates.
This is a great educational book that could work alongside a history unit. It tells about a Spanish boat sinking off the coast of Florida. The story then moves ahead in time to tell about the search for the sunken treasure. It includes details of the equipment used to aide in finding the treasure. Once the treasure is found the story tells what is to happen next, the recording process of all the material. This is also informational because it includes information that tells about what marine archaeologists use. Once all the material is analyzed it is brought to the surface. The story then goes into detail about the restoration and distribution process. The author website is http://www.gailgibbons.com/. I think it is a great website show more because it has teacher guides and resources! show less
