Description

Based on Spanish and Dutch documents from archive and private collections from all over Europe, The Dutch Revolt takes into account religions and economic, as well as political, factors, demonstrating the intricate links that tied the fate of the Netherlands to that of Spain, in a age when particularism was more potent that patriotism.

Nice, compact overview, treating the underlying political and social issues as well as the history of the military campaigns. Makes it clear that there was a lot more going on than a simple matter of Catholics vs. Protestants, but it does also give a strong impression that the author's sympathies lie mostly with the Catholic side.
This is the book, or at least one of the books, I should have read before tackling Parker's better known The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road - a concise narrative history of the revolt (or rather revolts) of the Netherlands to the truce of 1609.
Still the starting point in English for any study of this very, very important conflict.
Meesterlijke analyse van de Nederlandse opstanden die tot de losmaking van Spanje leidden, tussen 1565-1609.

First words
A casual visitor to the Netherlands in the summer of 1549 would have been astonished to find in every major town a series of triumphal arches, large and splendid, some depicting mythological subjects or classical stories, oth... (show all)ers showing scenes of martial exploits. Plays were staged by the local 'chambers of rhetoric'; processions and presentations took place; there were lion-fights and bull-fights; the chivalric romance of Amadis of Gaul was acted out in the grounds of the castle of Binche and special illustrated books were commissioned to describe all the festivities.
