Set in the very early days of the labour movement in the early twentieth century in Northern Sweden, following individuals through some tough times and climate. In style, it is the method that Enquist has made his own, that of documentary historical fiction, reporting facts where they are known, and extrapolating between these to tell the story. So we have letters, minutes of meetings and personal reminiscences carefully crafted together to bring the time and place alive for the reader. Quietly compelling. ( )
