The Tree House

This is a beautiful picture book with no text. This book allows the readers to create their own story just by looking a the pictures. It seems like the story is about a polar bear that finds a tree house and he invites different animals to come and enjoy the tree house as it is very big and looks a place where they can share stories and have fun with each other. One day all the animals had to go back home before winter comes so the only ones that stayed in the tree house were the polar bear and his friend grizzly bear. I think that I could use this book with students so that they use their own imagination to come up with their own stories. A polar bear rides across the ocean on a whale to a large tree house. He is later then joined by a brown bear where they then spend time together. As time passes by the water recedes, and new seasons come and pass. This wordless story uses various colors, and illustrations to portray the bear's adventure and how the environment changes before their eyes. This is one of my favorite books we read in class. The use of its illustrations and colors was beyond incredible because you use your own imagination to create the story. I love that there are no words because many types of children can connect to this. This book is very open-ended and I truly enjoyed the experience. I know that many children would love to get creative with this and show more come up with their own stories or just enjoy the pictures and focus on the development of their imagination. show less

Um, ok. Pretty, but no drama or development, not a fable or an adventure, barely an experience. At first I thought it was going to be like *The Mitten* but no. And when the rhinoceros butted the trunk I almost got a headache from the visual effect. I opine that this is just a Trip, and would maybe work better as a Triptych on the child's bedroom wall.... ;)

Pretentiously oversize, too, which is annoying for libraries and home shelves. So, another star off for book design.

Pure picture-book magic. A polar bear rides a whale to a tree rising out of the water. At the top of the tree is a tree house. He’s joined by a brown bear in a boat. The bears find that the tree house is the perfect place to read. When the water recedes, they are joined by flamingos, panda bears, and other animals that come by land and air. The tree house is a place of wonder, where a brown bear catches snowflakes in a butterfly net.

This book does not have any words but illustrates the story of two bears together and their other animal friends come to stay with them. Then once the animal friends stay during the season then leave the next season and all that's left is the two bears. I really love how this story purely shows illustrations and the readers must see the illustrations to figure out what is happening.

This amazing illustrated book about two bears living in a tree house in the middle of a body of water is so well done. The story has no writing on any of the pages to describe what is happening, but it does not need any. Because the artwork speaks for itself in visually showing the reader what is going on or/and being able to decide for themself what they want. The small details of the goldfish swimming in the water while it is still there to the vibration of the tree while the rhinoceros passed through gives the story movement.
For children, this book is great way for them to take the time to look through each page carefully and point out everything they see happening or taking place.

So many wordless books are sooo gorgeous...but they just don't circulate well. This quiet, beautiful story of various animals arriving at a tree house is gorgeous. Color washes over the pages, then centers on various small animals. Delicate details are skilfully woven into the oversize illustrations. But...will it circulate? This is another one that will appeal to a small group of quiet, sensitive children. Even if they don't have the circ stats of a Fancy Nancy or Mo Willems, it's good to have some books that appeal to this sector of children. Review copy received from Boyds Mills Press.
