This was an enjoyable book. Mary Jack is resilient and wise beyond her years. The author should be commended on the way she deals with the topic of child abuse/neglect , and how these and the need for children to feel accepted, loved, and to belong to a family can effect the emotions of a child. The characters are likeable, except for maybe Gerry, Jill and Mr. Snyder who are meant to be hated by the reader.
A quick read, this would make a perfect read-aloud for a Grade 5-7 class.

I enjoyed this book. As a child it was my favorite. I recently re-read it to remind myself why I liked it. It is a great book about people working together to become a family. I don't think I enjoyed it as much as an adult reader because the text is written with younger people in mind.
Please don't judge me by my cover!
