So disappointed to have had to move this book from currently reading to my library since I seem to have lost it and won't be doing any more 'reading'
At least I can mention some of what made me fond of this book. It contained beautifully put phrases as he looked back over his life. The most memorable one is about the day spent gathering hay with neighbours and his father. It was a good day requiring much physical effort and also much comaraderie. When the day closes he looks out over the field and captures the image in his mind. As years go by technological developments make this kind of copperative effort among neighbours obsolete, so every time he comes across a photo with hay in bales that certain way, it brings the feelings of that day back to him. A moving description of nostalgia. ( )

This is a somewhat melancholy story of a man in his 60's reflecting on his youth and his relationship with his father. Highly recommended for the lyrical and spare writing more than for th plot. ( )

This took a tremendously long time to read for a short book because it was getting interrupted by library books with due dates and that might have affected how I felt about it but I just never really connected into the story. The narrator is an older man who moves to a rural Norwegian cabin where he spent time with his father for a summer as a child and the story moves around in time as the events unfold. It is well written and the places feel very real but I never really connected to the characters and the mystery of things unsaid qualities. I had read another novel by Petterson, To Siberia, and never understood any of it so perahps this was a step up but not enough to keep looking for his works.

Here's what I wrote in 2009 about this read: "Good read. Quick read, simple prose, shorter novel. A older man recalls his 15th summer, the last spent with his father . . . In a coming-of-age tale set in Norway. Events during WWII, several years before that summer, affect a man, a woman, and their families for a lifetime. Lovely descriptions of Norway's forest lands in both summer and winter." ( )

Le Norvégien Per Petterson signe un magnifique roman sur les saisons de la vie, sur ces moments qui font que l'on n'est soudain plus le même.

Für Trond T.
First words
Tidlig november.  Klokka er ni.  Kjøttmeisene smeller mot vinduet.  Noen ganger faller de og blir liggende i nysnøen og kave før de kommer seg på vingene igjen.  Jeg veit ikke hva jeg har som de vil ha.

Early November. It's nine o'clock. The titmice are banging against the window.
Quotations
I listen to the news, cannot break that habit...but it no longer has the same place in my life. It does not affect my view of the world as it once did.
