It is 1866 & Tyson Garth, Confederate soldier goes to the Indian country around Fort Kealy to find and kill a traitor. He becomes a scout for the U.S. Army and witnesses the Fetterman Massacre.

He falls in love with a woman who half Indian. When she is captured by Indians & he is wounded, they both think the other is dead. Only after many adventures are they reunited. Hawkins has done his research into the life of Plains Indians, especially in winter. A very readable novel. ( )
