First of all I would like to thank all the trolls who made a concerted attempt to have Amy Schumer’s ‘The Girl with the lower back tattoo’ rated a one. If they had not made such an effort, had not gathered so much publicity in their attempts I may have never decided to purchase the book. I mean my interest was piqued and I wanted to know why they were so happy to lambast everything about Amy Schumer.
Amy Schumer has written a frank, brutally honest account of moments in her life show more whether they are good or bad. She has to be given full marks for telling moments of her life that are confronting and many would argue should not be discussed in public. It is never easy to talk about family illness, domestic violence and anything sexual. Yet Schumer tackles all these of issues with respect, authenticity and humour. There is some powerful writing in this book that will resonate with many.
I gained an enormous amount of respect for Schumer after reading this book. I was so impressed by her love of life and embracing everything that is thrown at her. show less

I had my doubts at first but then I remembered that I truly am a fan of Amy Schumer's comedy. I saw a lot of critical reviews but if you know her and appreciate her humor you will enjoy it. It was a nice break from the fiction I'd been reading and it was nice to be reminded that despite all the shit women face (sexual assault, body image issues, hostile and unfair work environments and on and on) we're not alone, we've come so far, but we still have work to do and we'll do it together. To be show more reminded of that was reason enough for me to read this book. She also forced me to do a bit of self reflection on my own life and how far I've come. Growin' up is fun with the Schum'! I also learned that we both love Sam Cooke and that is pretty fucking cool. show less
Every once in a while you read the right book at the right time. This was one of those books. I'm a first time mom and my daughter was born about three and a half months ago. Learning to be a mom was exciting and challenging - but nothing could have prepared me for the labor experience. Arrival Stories contains essays from women of all walks of life as they experience becoming moms. No two are the same. Some lost their babies, some had difficult pregnancies, some adopted, some conceived show more through IVF - all are candid about their experiences. It was heartening to read other experiences that were so similar and so different. My only "beef" is that many of the women in this collection are in a wealthier position than many Americans - making a few of the experiences nearly unrelatable. Other than that - I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. show less
I liked her before I read this, now I might be her biggest fan. I listened to the audio version, which (I'm guessing) added extra personality to the narrative because it's literally coming directly from the author's mouth. It was funny at times, surprisingly touching in others, and pretty damn brave and honest given how deep she goes and the types of personal stories she shares. My favorite part was hearing about her road to becoming a successful standup. I love that it wasn't a story of show more overnight success, but rather many years of hard work, awkwardly silent crowds, and total bombs before she finally found success. My take away: if you have a dream you'd better be willing to work f$&@ing hard for it. Who can't be inspired by that? show less
