The home depot series of books are without question the best "do it yourself" project guides around. There may be more comprehensive books out there in any given subject area, but these are the best for a single, simple reason: They use only parts that one can get at a Home Depot. Of course, this is shamelessly self serving, but it's also hugely useful when one doesn't care about much other than fixing whatever happened to break on the house today.
I got this book at a book fair for a notably reduced price. I keep it on my bookshelf and have referred to it for ideas about storage planning, but ultimately, you can get just as good ideas off the internet. I wouldn't pay much money to purchase this book.
This book serves as a general guide for plumbing issues. It makes a good distinction between problems an average person can fix, say a toilet that isn't flushing properly, and issues where you should have a professional come in.
