This book tells that a brave girl called Sybil Ludington rode a horse called Star through the night, warned her friends and neighbors about the British army. I would use this book in my teaching, because this is a really good historical fiction book to use in class. This book is good for 4-5 grade readers to read.
Use with grades 1-4. Students will enjoy hearing the action-packed true story of a young girl. The story is a biography about Sybil Ludington, who rode her horse through the night to warn the locals that the British army was coming. This is the true story of a brave and patriotic girl who risked her life during the Revolutionary war. It is also fascinating that this happened very close to where we live today. Addresses history, biographies, bravery, patriotism, war, etc. Use in the classroom show more as a read aloud and/or informational text for research. Have students research a brave American figure and write their own biographies. This could be for any figure or just figures of the American Revolution. They may also dress up and present their biography to the class. Maybe have them write it as an autobiography and act as if they were really that person. Good for discussing the difference between biography and autobiography. show less
