If any book deserves to be called a tome, this is it. If you own only one volume concerning art history, this is it. Not only do the contributors explore the nuances of each historical art period, they also tie in socioeconomic, political, and psychological impact of each era to provide a fuller view of the art and its times. A necessity for any library.
A door-stop of a book about an amazing museum's paintings that I will always refer back to in order to reminisce about my love of art and my love of Paris. You can ask for no better more urbane and witty guide through the magisterial collection of this amazing museum. A book that continues to educate and entertain through beatiful photographs of world famous paintings and their authors. A book to treasure.
Bought this after reading "Girl With a Pearl Earring". A well written biography interspersed with Vermeer's wonderful paintings. Highly recommended.
Obviously the LT star-system cannot be applied to a collection of some of the world's greatest painting. Still, it should be noted that Lawrence Gowing's commentary is fatuous approaching downrigh silly.
