This gets major coolness points for being a way that my anscestors learned spelling and bonus points for being really old. The book begins with many rules of grammar (that I imagine a new speller could not actually read...), and continues on with the alphabet in three fonts, and then with phonetic pictures, as it is most commonly taught today. It goes into phonetic word families in later lessons, and towards the end of the book, the rules are written out and other exercises are included. show more Though it doesn't have any fancy materials, this book is actually sound phonetic teaching, and not a bad source for finding word families. show less
These reproductions of McGuffey's readers are useful volumes for those interested in the history of education in America. The content is faithful to the original and the binding is sturdy. I work at a living history museum and we use these in our 19th century schoolhouse to demonstrate how children learned to read. This volume works well in demonstrating late-elementary/early-middle school reading and visitors to the museum often find it interesting that students had access to such a wide show more range of topics. show less
