A useful overview of the main theoretical schools in counseling psychology and their adaption to group therapeutic work. Not a lot of high or low points here. It does draw heavily from some new world existentialists like Yalom, though as is often the case gives short shrift to old world practitioners or off-shoots of this and other theoretical schools. I'm sure its because these are written by and for American rather than European grad students. It would be interesting to see a comparison show more between what is typically used in programs here in the states and what is used in grad programs overseas. show less
A book which purports to help prepare individuals for leadership in group settings by providing examples to stimulate openness and trust. For basic use in group settings, these techniques have been used for years to help build trust among group participants and their group leaders. I used this book as a required textbook for a class in pastoral education. I don't recommend this book unless the reader has adequate background in psychological theory, as these could be carelessly misused and show more thus inadvertently thwart group progress. Very useful for learning the context for role-playings effectiveness in one-on-one and group settings. show less
This is the book we used as a textbook for my Group Process course at Ivy Tech Community College. The book provides great ways to understand the dynamics of how a group properly functions. At times, as with all or most textbooks, it seems a bit long, but the information provided goes in great detail on how to properly run a successful group on a wide range of topics. This book provides those individuals that never believed they could run a successful group the means to do so. If you are in show more the Social Work/Human Services field this is a must read so you can also be adequately prepared to run a successful group. show less
