I found that the language in the story kept with the oral tradition. However, I did not like how the sentences were set up for the majority of the story. Whenever the farmers would call on certain animals to get the goat out of their garden, they would say "let's get dog" or "let's get cow". For children, I prefer reading "let's get the dog" and "let's get the cow". A major theme that I found emerged was, that no matter how small or incapable one may seem, never underestimate one's abilities.
This is a very simple re-telling of the folk tale with good illustrations of people with light, medium and dark skin tones.
