This is the book, and the series, that taught me to read, way back in 1965. It taught me to *want* to read because I wanted to understand all the fun being had by Dick and Jane (along with Sally, and Spot, and Puff). Thank you to this book for starting my fantastic adventure that has lasted me a lifetime. How can I rate this book anything less than ALL THE STARS?!

I wonder what is the traditional First Book for kids now in school? I'll have to ask the Littles. I was reading to my own show more daughters long before they started school and can easily remember many of those books, but now wonder what were the First Books my girls read officially to learn to read in school. I'll ask them too.

A postscript:
Yes. I know. There is legitimate criticism about Dick and Jane, most especially about the lack of diversity. And I wholeheartedly agree that diversity is lacking. But when I learned to read, we had not progressed in that direction yet. Hopefully many kids had the same experience I did with this series -- they learned to read. That's step 1 for any education and functionality in modern times.

Also, while reading Dick and Jane I remember at my school we also learned phonics along side so I don't recall just memorizing words by sight, which is another criticism of the series that I don't recall being an issue.

All five of my grands have gone to the same elementary school. There they teach something called the Carden Method and all of them learned to read and amazed me with their reading above grade level abilities from the start. I started to do a Carden Method search. Google thinks I might want to know about "Carden Method criticism." Sounds like it might not be perfect either.

We learn --> We change --> We advance.

First, though, we must learn to read.

About time I get around to reviewing this. I was already reading a bit going in to first grade, and this was the book they gave us there. Continued a firm foundation for my lifetime of reading. I won't tell the rest. Spoilers, you know?
Long on my book shelf, this will be returned to a shelf of favorite/special books. When I was in elementary school in the 1950's, this was a primary reader. With simple sentences such as "The wagon is red." "See Dick run after the wagon." "Run Dick Run, " I learned to read.

Spot the dog and Puff the cat joined the team of Dick, his sister Jane, and their younger sibling Sally. The two animals chased after them as the children roller skated, or pushed their wagons. Adventures were simple. They show more roller skated while wearing a key around their neck which helped adjust the skates to fit the bottom of their shoes. They went grocery shopping with their month and pushed the cart, even when heavy.

Tim was Sally's teddy bear and she had simple conversations with him including "Look, Tim. Look down here. I see cookies. I see cookies down here. Cookies, cookies, cookies." Puff the cat had simple adventures. Conversations regarding Puff were "See Puff jump down. See Puff jump and go. Jump down, funny Puff. Jump down. Jump Down. Go, go go."

In the 50's most women remained home, took care of the children, watched their antics while making dinner for the family. Father wore a suit and asked the children what they did that day. Sally, Dick and Jane wore clean clothes, the girls wore dresses and white socks with a level of lace around the top. Dick had a neat hair cut with each hair brushed in place every day. His clothes consisted of a pair of clean slacks and a cotton shirt.

Spot ran for sticks that were thrown by Dick. When held by Sally, Puff jumped off the swings and on to the grass.

I was part of the American generation who learned to read with these simple books portraying an in-tack family. No family had a divorce. Each child had simple toys. The mother had a bid to protect her clothes when she made her dinner meal, She received a new

Jane had a bike with a large tire in front and two wheels in back. There was a step which allowed Jane to climb up with her Raggedy Ann doll while Dick pulled Sally on a read wagon.

This book held special interest to me. My childhood memories in the 1950's were unique because of a grandmother whom I loved dearly, and a special great grandmother who was widowed and found work by cleaning houses or taking care of older people who were bed or wheel chair bound.

These two played an important role in my life. They taught kindness, simply generosity, and how to show love when money was limited. There was always time for my sisters and me. A book was purchased every week, and we had coloring books and crayons which were precious and well taken care of. A large box of 100 crayons that had a sharpener in the back of the box was a very special treat!!

The Dick and Jane books were special because my great grandmother hailed from the Virginia mountains where a train ran through and my Great Grand Father who fixed the tracks for a living, took a liking to her and moved her to Pennsylvania. Poor in money, rich in love, there was always money for a book. I remember that my Great Grandmother could not read, yet she tried to teach herself simple words from a Dick and Jane book. I remember climbing the wide wooded steps up hill to her house, and listening to her pronunciation of words from thee books.

Through the screen door I heard her say "See the wagon! The wagon is red! Look Jack; Look Sally at Puff and Spot."

The Dick and Jane books played a special part of my childhood. The memories, and the lessons learned remain with me through this day!

This heartwarming story is great for children to see how a father reacts after the war. It is told from the perspective of the son. A father who served in the war and his son are getting ready for George Washington to visit their town. George Washington is about to become president. When George Washington comes to town he thanks the man for his service and the man starts to cry. It is a very touching ending to the story.
