Un'alternativa al Disegno Intelligente

Nei primi anni 2000 negli Stati Uniti partì una campagna avviata dai fondamentalisti cristiani per osteggiare l'insegnamento dell'evoluzione. La campagna fu subdola: si richiese di affiancare allo studio della *teoria* dell'evoluzione un'altra teoria, quella dell'Intelligent Design (ID, da noi traslitterato in Disegno Intelligente, anziché il più corretto Progetto Intelligente). In pratica, la varietà dell'universo è dovuta al fatto che un show more Progettista ha preparato tutte le cose perché si sviluppassero man mano così. L'allora venticinquenne Bobby Henderson pensò di contrastare l'ID mostrando che in realtà l'universo era stato progettato - non proprio benissimo, ma d'altronde basta darsi un'occhiata in giro per accorgersene - da un Prodigioso Spaghetto Volante, e scrisse questo libro fornendo le prove scientifiche di tutto questo. In seguito pare che Henderson abbia preso le distanze dalla sua religione, ma come capita spesso (avete mai visto Vita di Brian?) ciò non ha impedito la creazione di una Chiesa Pastafariana.
Il fondamentale testo di Henderson era stato mal tradotto a suo tempo: ora è uscita una nuova edizione tradotta da Paolo Sinigaglia, che ha rimesso a posto un po' di cose nella più pura ortodossia pastafariana. Mi limito a citare una nota. La sezione Capire il pastafarianesimo comincia con l'esergo «L’uomo non vive soltanto di pane. – MOSÈ, Deuteronomio 13,7» e la nota del traduttore «In realtà, la citazione è Deuteronomio 8,3, ma chi siamo noi per mettere in discussione le parole del Profeta? (NdT)». Credo che anche se non giungerete alla Verità la lettura di questo libro vi permetterà di capire molte cose sulla Vita, la Religione e tutto quanto. show less

This is just a brilliant parody that had me in stitches, worthy of rereading in the whole or in parts many times (and I have, now for the umpteenth time).

While Christopher Hitchens improved on the Ten Commandments, I humbly submit that even CH's proposal has been surpassed by the FSM (through Bobby Henderson via Pirate Mosey) with The Eight “I’d Really Rather You Didn’ts”.

I love this book so much that I've gifted it a few times and own both the paperback and the ebook.

An entertaining premise that, unfortunately, cannot sustain the laughs for the entirety of the book. It will raise its fair share of wry smiles, light sniggers and the occasional belly-laugh, and it is an interestingly subversive way to show the absurdity of religion. Its riff on the Ten Commandments - here the 'Eight I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts"' - is particularly amusing. However, it runs out of steam long before the end, and the final chapter, 'Enlightenment Institute', is, with the show more exception of the essay 'Of Penguins and Pasta', rather dire and jargon-filled. Nevertheless, I would be interested in reading other riffs on this topic, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster is probably deserving of a New Testament to truly convey the glory of His Noodly Presence. Perhaps a New Pasta-ment? Give it a try - after all, the Pastafarians offer a God-back guarantee: "Try us for thirty days and if you don't like us, your God will most likely take you back."" show less

Very funny and full of ridiculous jokes and impossible happenings, non of which, however, are as ridiculous or impossible as the garbage in the bible.
Religious people who dismiss this work as nonsense are missing the point, which is probably why they followed religion in the first place. Five full stars (Plus the one over the stable.)
