Short biography
John Chrysostom (c. 347–407, Greek: Ἰωάννης ὁ Χρυσόστομος), Archbishop of Constantinople, was an important Early Church Father. He is known for his preaching and public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical and political leaders, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, and his ascetic sensibilities. This book reoriented my world view from thinking money brings freedom and believing money simply amplifies who you really are (if you’re good, with money you’ll do good things; if you’re bad, with money you’ll do evil) to seeing how God’s hand allows wealthy people and poor people to suffer and/or live in luxury for their salvation. An eye opening and humbling book full of wisdom and practical theology.
They don't call him the "golden mouth" for nothing! This book is filled with the moving and insightful homilies of St. John Chrysostom and I highly recommend giving it a read. His insights on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans are especially fascinating, given the way that Romans has been misused and abused by Protestants over the past several hundred years. My only complaint is with the editors, who exhibit a very clear anti-Catholic, pro-Protestant bias, but, of course, this bias is well show more known in regards to the Schaff tradition so one can't complain too loudly. show less
St. John Chrysostom. On The Priesthood. St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 1977.
St. John Chrysostom is one of our saints (Holy Women, Holy Men) and, although he lived in the fourth century, his words are relevant today. The treatise takes the form of a dialogue between himself and a close friend he calls Basil. Basil has just agreed to go for the priesthood; John defends his reasons for not doing so. The dialogue leaves Basil feeling anxious and betrayed (by John). For his part, John considers show more he has defended himself well and tells Basil he will be there for him when the need arises. So now you know the story. But in the telling there are historical insights for us. One is the rationale for not challenging Chrysostom’s version of the Trinity. Another is “Christians can damage Christ’s cause more than his enemies and foes.” If you want blood and gore, there is that too. In his final chapter he touches on the disasters of war. As is usual with these booklets, the words of the translator in the Introduction contain much of value.
