This is a thick book of purportedly true ghost stories from throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Most fall into the category of folklore. In addition to some chills, this book contains a lot of Virginia history, and much architectural information about historic properties in Virginia. There are frequent quotations from descriptions in the Virginia Landmarks Register. There are also numerous photos (of many of the properties) and drawings (of purported spooky events). Despite a rather dry show more writing style and occasional odd wordings/syntax, this is more well done than many of the regional "true ghost story" books one encounters, especially for readers interested in history and architecture as well as eerie stories.

There is at least one historical inaccuracy in this book -- a product of when it was written

1st of Taylor's books about ghosts in and around Williamsburg. This is much better than the second book he does give history on each location and generally there's a picture. But most have some "eyewitness" account on what happened there. Also what was odd about this one to me was that soe of the eyewitness accounts date back to the early 1800s. A couple of the stories of note: a portrait that expresses it's dislike when moved from it's place in the house by jumping off the wall or just a show more general ruckus. Another a place called Dancing Point where nothing will grow and hasn't for centuries.. It is said that the land owner and the devil had a dancing contest there with the devil being the loser. show less
An interesting collection of local ghost stories from environs of Williamsburg, VA. Sometimes the author's writing style is more dryly journalistic than perhaps it should be for a book of ghost stories, but one must admire Mr. Taylor's collections of ghost stories as good local history and folklore.
Ghosts stories and haunted houses in the Richmond area. Entertaining book and has pictures that go along with the corresponding houses/locations for nearly all of the locations mentioned
