About the Author

Next to Picasso, Matisse is probably the greatest and most versatile artist of modernism. His long career embraced most of the currents of postimpressionist art, in all of which he created highly personal works of remarkable beauty and subtlety. Born in Picardie, France, Matisse came to Paris as a show more youth to study law, but soon began to study painting under such conventional masters as Bouguereau. Later, he moved to impressionism and fell under the influence of Cezanne; soon after, he was using pure color in the style that characterized the Fauves (The Wild Beasts), an innovative school of art whose leading master he became. Subsequently, Matisse went through an expressionist phase, during which he was much affected by African and Near Eastern art. In that period, flat decorative patterns in brilliant colors predominated in his work, such as "La Danse" and "La Musique." In 1914, Matisse went to live on the Riviera, where he remained for the rest of his long life. Here, his great series of Odalisques occupied him until the 1930's. His last major work was the decoration of a convent chapel at Venice. Matisse was also a book illustrator of originality, a highly individual sculptor, and a creator of extraordinary paper cutouts, in which he composed pictures using pieces of brightly colored paper. Despite severe arthritis, Matisse worked until his death at the age of 85. In 1992, a major exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; the extraordinarily large attendance only confirmed his place as one of the greatest French painters of the twentieth century. I have a few of the books in the series.

On the plus side, I really like the concept - picture books introducing famous artists to young children. What could be cooler than that?

Unfortunately, I don't like the writing that much. Prose would be perfectly suited for these pictures, but instead the author keeps trying to write it in rhyme, and it falls very flat. The whole thing seems trite, and a lot of the rhymes and meter end up sounding forced.

I'd still be buying the books, despite this, show more because I like the idea so much, except we've run into a new snag - they're not very well put together. By which I mean that all of the books we have in this series started to fall apart within a year, a year and a half of their purchase. They're board books, and the nieces are actually too old to "need" board books - they're not rough on the books at all. This should not be happening. The shoddy construction *will* keep me from buying more books, where awkward text wouldn't.

If these books ever get printed in paperback, or maybe as a hardcover compilation, I'll probably buy them. But I cannot recommend that anybody buy the board books.

in 1983 when i had no business spending money on this book instead of food (which was my choice) i purchased the oversized newly published hardback version of this masterpiece. it holds a place of honor on my bookshelves .. heavy stock paper, gorgeous cut outs we all have seen replicated scores of times on cards and posters .. and sometimes on museum walls. a beauty of an artbook.
A short but in depth reflection by Matisse on how he worked, what drove his inspiration and how he saw his art. Much like a musical composition. Useful for writing purposes.
I was seduced by the cover of this book. I called the picture, a paper-cut, 'Star Man' and even after I knew it was Icarus, to me it was Star Man swimming strongly through the universe with a fiercly beating heart. It inspired me and from that followed my love of Matisse. I wouldn't recommend this book any more than any of his other's - anything that features Matisse's paintings or wonderful paper-cuts work will be 5-star plus.
