This is a a haunting volume. The American Civil War was one of the first conflicts to not only be photographed but it seemed multitudes of artists were able to capture the era and the horrors that enveloped a young nation as it suffered some serious growing pains.
I can't remember if this is a re-read- but it must be. It's a Scholastic book published in 1970 and I was a fool for biographies, and spent every cent I had on books through the magical Scholastic order forms the teachers would pass out. On the other hand, I'm certain I would have remembered the stellar illustrations by Mort Kunstler.

This is the first time I've read a Nightinale bio as an adult. Florence sure was hemmed in by her times, and many of the situations described just made me sad. show more One wonders, given the huge accomplishments she achieved with all the constraints, what she might have done without. The war scenes were horrific, perhaps because I brought an adult sensibility to them.

Anyone know of a good modern bio of Nightingale? I think I'd like to read one for grown-ups.

A beautiful collection of artwork by one of the premier Civil War artists. The next best thing to being able to view the original works themselves. Collection captures the essence of the war's early years.

World War II: 1939-1945 by James I. Robertson and Mort Künstler is a book about World World II for young elementary readers.

The book talks about important events during World War II including, D-day, The Battle of the Bulge, Pearl Harbor, and also describes the war at sea, the Asian jungles, kamikaze's, and the concentration camps.

The paintings by Mort Künstler are show more stunning. They are full color paintings and almost give the book a vintage feel.

I especially enjoyed the time line.

This is a another great book for elementary readers that's engaging and different from reading in a standard textbook. Children will enjoy reading along while the paintings bring the story to life.

Thanks to Netgalley for sharing a copy with me.
