Exciting start to the new series. The story is told with a mix of current action and flashbacks to flesh out the history of the unfolding events. I started reading and couldn't put it down until I finished.
Zach is a relative newcomer to Eagle Mountain. Four years earlier, his sister was murdered, and his grief caused him to lose focus for a while. Since arriving in town, he has had a steady job with the mining company and volunteers with the Search and Rescue group. As the book opens, he show more and the others are on a call to evacuate some campers caught in a flood. When they find the body of a dead woman, Zach is stunned to discover it is the sister he thought was dead.
Shelby is an FBI agent who was one of Camille's contacts. Camille was in WITSEC after she witnessed a murder, but it wasn't enough to convict the perps. Camille disappeared from her new life, and Shelby was looking for her. Shelby believes Camille was looking for Zach to warn him about something, but she doesn't know what.
The suspense of the story kept me glued to the pages. Zach doesn't believe he is in danger, while Shelby is sure he knows something that puts a target on his back. I liked the persistence she showed in getting him to open up. The twists of their investigation kept me wondering who was behind it. The final confrontation took me by surprise and wasn't what I expected.
I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Zach and Shelby. The sparks were there from the start, but Zach's grief and anger over Camille's death overrode them initially. The more time they spent together, the more they connected. I loved seeing them together and how Shelby helped Zach through his grief. There are some obstacles, including Shelby's job, but the biggest one comes at the end. That was a twist I didn't see coming. show less

Fantastic start to the new series! I really must start these books earlier in the day because I can't put them down once I start, and end up staying up way too late. This one pulled me in from the beginning, thanks in part to an adorable avalanche rescue dog named Shelby. I loved the behind-the-scenes look at what ski patrols and avalanche rescuers do. It is far more involved and intense than I realized. The author's research into the subject shines, as does her respect for the jobs they do.

Lily and Shelby are new to the resort's ski patrol team, and Lily finds the going a little rough. The ski patrol captain, Scott, appears to have taken a dislike to her, his gruff attitude making her wonder what she did wrong. She has no idea that Scott's gruffness is his defense against the attraction he feels toward her. The friction begins to dissipate as they work together. Learning that both have lost loved ones in avalanche accidents creates an unexpected bond. However, exploring their growing feelings takes a back seat when a nine-year-old guest goes missing.
The suspense of Jackson's disappearance was well done. Lily has a personal connection to the boy that intensifies her determination to find him, along with a couple of events that aroused her suspicion about his disappearance. Lily and Scott, with their dogs, are part of the team searching for him. An approaching storm complicates the search, trapping Lily and Scott in an overnight stay in the woods. Hopes rise the next morning when they spot ski tracks, only to be dashed by an avalanche that may have caught Jackson in it. I liked Lily's faith that Jackson escaped.
Lily and Scott's continued search is a rollercoaster of hope and fear. I was on the edge of my seat as they closed in on their goal, only to find that someone was determined to stop them. The motivation behind Jackson's disappearance upped the urgency to find him before it was too late. A twist at the end confirmed my suspicion about one of the characters and made a nail-biter of a final confrontation.
I liked the ending and seeing Lily and Scott ready to see where the future takes them. The epilogue was a nice follow-up to Shelby's training and Jackson's recovery from his ordeal. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. show less

Very good book with gripping suspense as the search for the Ice Cold Killer continued. Lacy (Saved by the Sheriff) asked her good friend Bette to come to Eagle Mountain and cater her wedding, giving Bette the chance for the new start she was looking for. But from the moment she arrived, Bette became someone's target. Was it the Ice Cold Killer or was someone from Bette's past determined to make trouble for her? Cody was one of Travis's groomsmen, currently on leave from the Marshal's show more Service, and appointed himself Bette's protector.
The intensity of the suspense remained high throughout the book. Though the problems began with petty annoyances, things quickly escalated. Bette's situation became more serious when someone tried to use her past against her and set her up as a thief. The deaths of two more women put everyone on edge, as the lack of clues frustrated Travis and the others working the case. An ice fishing expedition for Cory and Bette turned into a fight for their lives and questions piled up about who and why Bette was a target. Though I began to have my suspicions about the who, the why remained elusive. The final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat as everything became clear and Bette struggled to escape. The resolution was quite satisfying, though the Ice Cold Killer was still wreaking havoc on the town. I can't wait for the next book.
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Bette and Cody. There were sparks between them from the start. Bette was wary though. First, she had trust issues with men, thanks to the man whose influence ended up with her in prison. Second, Bette was understandably skittish around law enforcement officers. Cody was flat-out attracted and wanted to see where it might go. I was a bit irate at his reaction when he found out about her past, how he was so quick to judge and believe the worst. I ached for Bette because she hoped for a more trusting attitude from him. Cody frustrated me several times through the book, as he would draw closer to Bette, then pull back as something else would raise his suspicions. I liked Bette's attitude of admitting the mistakes of her past but not letting them define her future. She remained true to herself, and I liked seeing her stand up to Cody when he was a jerk. There were some good scenes between them that showed their growing feelings, such as the sleigh ride and even the ice fishing. It took nearly losing her for Cody to realize the depth of his feelings and he redeemed himself very nicely at the end. show less

I really need to stop starting these books late in the day if I want to get any sleep. I started reading after dinner and couldn't put it down until I finished it, well after midnight. Once again, the author penned a story that sucked me in at the beginning and kept me hooked to the end.
Harper moved back to Eagle Mountain after her divorce, ready to move on with her life. She joined the Search and Rescue team to stay busy and meet new people. The last person she expected to see was her high show more school sweetheart, Ryker.
Ryker left Eagle Mountain after being accused of murdering his young cousin. He was cleared, but many people still looked at him as if he were guilty. After settling into a new town, the woman he was dating got pregnant, and they married. Then she left him, abandoning their daughter. Ryker returned to Eagle Mountain, where his parents could help him care for four-year-old Charlotte while working his new job as a deputy. He was shocked when he ran into Harper at an accident scene.
Harper and Ryker have a history together. They were teen sweethearts despite Harper's mom's disapproval. When Harper became pregnant, her parents sent her away and prevented her from contacting Ryker. At the same time, Ryker was dealing with the murder of his cousin without her support. Neither had a way to find each other. They were wary when they met again, remembering the past pain. I liked that they were mature enough to talk and clear the air about their past, setting the stage for renewing their friendship. They didn't expect to discover their enduring attraction.
Before they can explore those feelings, Ryker's daughter is kidnapped. I was glued to the pages as the sheriff's department, search and rescue team, and volunteers kicked into high gear to find the little girl. I loved how Ryker and Harper teamed up, first to figure out who took Charlotte and then later to search. It was a roller coaster of successes and disappointments with a nail-biting conclusion.
There are still some things Ryker and Harper must deal with before they can look to a future together. I ached for Ryker, who believes he's made too many mistakes with Harper for her to trust him. I loved their conversation and openness with each other as they put the past to rest. The epilogue was terrific. show less
