This book is basically about the Late Antique origins of Latin medieval civilization. I reviewed the parts about St. Jerome and Cassiodorus. I am not sure why this book is still so often referenced. Its urbane, good-natured unbelief is irritating; as a source of information, it is outdated. I suppose I should be relieved that it is not of a postmodern spirit.
