This was one of a set of books I read for a course that made me realize that there simply isn't enough reliable evidence to say much of anything about the early Christian church. That's not what the book itself says; it's what it didn't say that was so convincing.
Good basic introduction to the historical critical method applied to the NT. Since it first appeared in 1975, helped more than a generation of theology students prepare for their exams.
Well written, scholarly throughout its entirety, ambitious in scope, this book takes a new approach to the study of the book of Luke. It does not, however, attempt to assert any new truth. It does rightly affirm what is the truth. A very interesting book indeed.
Much attention to interpretive and historiographical issues.
