Woo Hoo! Alyssa Day has certainly caught my attention with an empathic Riley Dawson and a hot group of Poseidon’s warriors that are on a treasure hunt, of sorts. I know I’m all tingly and ready to go. lol

Her grief called to him. It would not be denied. He must got to her.

The mental telepathic dialogue had me cracking up, so I put a smile on my face and prepared myself for a fun, sexy read. I mean, she’s an empath and he’s a high prince, the first of Poseidon’s warriors, so what show more could possibly go wrong.

“You’re not going to drink my blood or rip my arms off, are you? Because my day has really sucked, and I’m so not up for that,” she said…

Barrabas, a powerful vampire, felt the disturbance caused by their meeting. Oh man, so cool. Water warriors and blood sucking Vampires. What more could I want? I am hooked and happy.

Everything Conlan does is for Atlantis, so denying his overwhelming desire for Riley, who is not only a forbidden human, but also an empath, literally brought him to his knees. Conlan and his warriors were tasked with protecting the humans from shapeshifters and vampires, and were clearly from the Land of Hunk.

I am feeling upbeat, having fun, sharing Conlan and Riley’s internal dialogue and lovin ‘ every minute of it. And now we find out why they are above ground…Poseidon’s Trident has been stolen. Conlan could lose his kingdom if they don’t recover it.

“You’re not a vampire, because you’ve got a heartbeat,” she said. “Are you a shapeshifter? What kind of furry are you going to get?” He laughed. “I’m not going to turn furry, brave one. I am nothing you know.”

Conlan knows that empaths don’t exist, yet here’s Riley. He also knows that the soul meld doesn’t exist, yet how to explain the sparks between them.

Well, Alyssa, you drew me in, kept me riveted to the pages, worrying and fretting, laughing and smiling, never letting me go. The action kept the story flowing as I devoured the words. The world created was full of wonder and I am so happy to have been able to visit Atlantis and meet all these fabulous characters that escaped from the mind of Alyssa Day.

They say nobody can defeat the goddess of war and death. Soli Greymind happens to be just that. Nobody.

I had been waiting for this book, and it did not disappoint. This is such a fun, fast-paced read. I couldn't put it down. It is packed with action, danger, death, magic, and yearning. The writing was so good in places that I had to pause and just let it settle into my brain. And then there were times I found myself laughing out loud at the wit and audacity - especially when Chitai was show more flirting. I have to tell you, that woman warrior has game, lol. Kaelen has some good lines, himself.

All of the characters were well-written and likeable, though Trick got on my nerves sometimes with his overprotectiveness. I get, however, using him to highlight Kaelen and his respect for Soli's agency. I truly felt for each member of the company on this quest, this little found family that has come so far. And I was so excited by the character that joins us at the end of the book. It makes waiting for book 2 that much harder!

I loved watching Soli come more and more into her own, learning that this Nobody can be so much more, without needing to be "fixed." Seeing her friends love and support her when she has only known cruelty, without expecting her to change who she is, was such a balm. Kaelen's "who did this to you" energy really felt like he took deep, personal offense at every act of cruelty Soli has ever faced.

I also love the representation of depression in this book. While mental health is less stigmatized than it has been in the past, it is still meaningful to see a world where it is persecuted as it is in this book, and the struggle for dignity despite that. We might not still be subjected to the indignities that those who have come before us have faced, many with mental health struggles still don't have as much support as they deserve. But as the author reminds us: when we survive and conquer a period of grey in real life, we're big damn heroes.

Thank you, Alyssa Day! This is the sexy vampire fantasy novel I’ve been missing. I have stopped reading some well known vampire series because I just couldn’t take the alpha never learning to give a little with his true love or there being so much sex and barely any story. Day has found the perfect balance of an alpha not locking his love up so no one hurts them (although he wants to) and lots of great storylines to go with the steamy scenes.

And to go along with the great character show more development, Day actually incorporates a fantasy world that incorporates more than just vampires and/or werewolves. This opens up so many potential storylines and love matches that I am excited to see what Day has in store for us. The action scenes were excellent and I love that Day included two human caretakers who may be younger than the vampires, but help to keep them stable, and are still wonderfully racy for an older couple.

The reader may be dropped into the middle of the action without one hundred pages of back story before, but I think Day is able to pull it off. She works the back story in as the book progresses, and leaves some of the characters with a bit of mystery about them at the end. But if you’ve read any romance you should be able to see the pairings that will be coming and have an inkling of their dramatic/tragic backstory.

I’m going to start online stalking (but in a nice way) Day so I can find out when the next VMC book is coming. And since this is the first book I’ve read by her, I’m intrigued to read some more of her stories. show less
