About the Author

Paul Hindemith was a German composer and conductor of great originality. His career began with the study of the violin and the viola, and he held important positions in German ensembles before the Nazi era. Under Hitler's regime, Hindemith experienced difficulties, both artistically and show more politically. For example, he refused to cease ensemble playing with known Jews. Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister, accused Hindemith of cultural Bolshevism, and his music fell into official desuetude. Unwilling to compromise, Hindemith began accepting engagements abroad. During the late 1930s, he emigrated to the United States, and in 1946 he became a U.S. citizen. Hindemith's musical style is uniquely his own. He sought in each piece to find the style, musical vocabulary, and thematic material most suitable for the intended use of the piece. He was immensely prolific and eclectic as a composer, writer, and teacher. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

(Schott). Originally published in the 1940s, Paul Hindemith's remakable textbooks are still the outstanding works of their kind. In contrast to many musical textbooks written by academic musicians, these were produced by a man who could play every instrument of the orchestra, could compose a satisfying piece for almost every kind of ensemble, and who was one of the most stimulating teachers of his day. It is therefore not surprising that nearly forty years later these books should remain show more essential reading for the student and the professional musician. show less
This work, the "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria Von Weber," is surely one of those works that no one can hate. I still remember my first hearing, when a teenager. I was immediately hooked. And, with this work, my ears were flung open to the music of the last century. Stravinsky, Ives, Kirchner, Hovhaness, Rautavaara . . . they all followed.

This work, of course, has great tunes and settings transformed by a master of harmony and melody. The second movement has exotic color, show more somehow encompassing both "the Orient" and jazz.

This is one of Hindemith's most accessible works, and it does not fade in value over time, over repeated listenings. Surely a sign of greatness?

The title is quite accurate. Hindemith quickly and efficiently develops what he needs to say. This is a thin book packed with useful information and is a great tool for reviewing basic theory.
