A Complete Guide To Heraldry - Illustrated by Nine Plates and Nearly 800 other Designs by Arthur Charles Fox-Davies
I'm actually in the Project Gutenberg edition at http://www.gutenberg.org/files/48573/48573-h/48573-h.htm and hoping that this and that are the same, but it's a lovely pick up and browse sort of a book. I'd expected more about the art and less about the weaponry, but I'm pleasantly surprised indeed. Very much a browsing book rather than a cover-to-cover one for anyone outside of specialty research, but I'll definitely be going back over this a few more times.
This is an excellent work of heraldry, covering a vast range of knowledge. Fox-Davies' provides in-depth analysis of the history behind charges used in heraldry, explains many famous devices in heraldry and dispels many common heraldic myths. Included are many figures and color plates that provide vivid examples of both elements and complete coats, and all are explained in detail. This is the book to get if you have an interest in heraldry.
This is probably one of the better staples for an amateur herald's library. The definitions and examples are painstakingly explained, but the illustrations often leave something to be desired.
This is known as the "bible" of Heraldry, a must have reference book of this ancient art-form
