Von Volbroth's introduction to world heraldry is a bit simplistic, and therefore would probably not be that satisfying to the educated layman or the heraldic artist/professional. But as an introduction, it is quite effective. Some of its suppositions and "historical" assertions have been debunked in the intervening years, but it cannot be faulted as a basic guide to terminology and praxis.
This book has one major flaw--in some of the original illustrations, the author unintentionally changed show more the colors of the heraldic charges. As colors are actually assigned as part of the grant of a coat of arms, and therefore part of the hieratic language of heraldry, this is a serious issue. A classopean-oriented book on heraldry.

Heraldika zaujímá v kultuře křesťanských zemí význačné místo, protože erby vyjadřují svým způsobem tradici a dějiny. S erby se neustále setkávame jako s typickými znaky a rozlišovacími pomůckami rodů, měst, oblastí i států. Měli bychom se proto snažit poznat blíže heraldiku a význam erbů. Tato publikace nám to srozumitelným způsobem umožní.
Heraldika má vlasní přesná pravidla a způsoby rozlišování, není to, ale žádná tajná nauka. Erby jsou show more rozlišovací znaky, které nám umožňujií pomocí nezaměnitelných obrazových symbolů zřetelně rozlišit jednotlivé významné osobnosti, rody, spolky, stav a rozrůstaní rodů. Ve společnosti, kde většina lidí neuměla číst a psát, znali i obyčejní poddaní erby svého rodu, svého pána nebo panovníka. Erby sloužili k označení hodnosti, přestiže a majetku, pro vzdělance byla řeč erbů samozřejmostí.
Současný zájem o erby není náhodný. Máme rádi pestré barvy a jasné symboly, obrázek je často důležitější než písmo a text. Znaky továren, firemní označení, symboly a odznaky spolků jsou v podstatě určitým druhem erbu.
