A good overview of the subject, I think. It has a nice amount of historical background and context, detailed descriptions and explanations of all aspects of heraldic achievements, including the common meanings of many symbols and designs. There are tons of color and b&w images of various achievements (shields, helmets, full signs, etc.), and examples and discussion of modern applications, such as for states and nations.

It was an entertaining and informative read, and I think it'll be a show more great reference. show less
Large format and trying to do too much in limited space. For instance, spends multiple pages discussing the human concept of “signs” from antiquity to the present. Waste.

Does have all the position terms of the lion, spread out over three pages.
Chapter on Heraldic Accessories does a decent job discussing supporters and mantling.
Covers crowns and helmets.
The main text is shuffled around the page in amongst illustrations of all sizes and their descriptions. Very confusing.

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in heraldry, with exquisite color artwork throughout. It contains a broad overview of the history of heraldry, and how it developed over the centuries. My personal favorite for pure enjoyment of the art-form.
A particularly good resources for images of heraldry 'in the wild' and of a wide range of cultures. Some fantastic examples of medieval heraldic display which is my main interest.
