Conflicted on this - conceptually love the idea of a children's book designed to inspire girls with iconic women from history. It's desperately needed, and the art is a great touch, as well as encouragement for kids to capture their own stories. The page per person gives great bandwidth to capture a real range, too.

The conflict comes from some of these feeling over simplified and a lot or hard truths - the horrifying deaths of the women - are skipped over despite the fact a smart child might show more do the math on date of birth vs date of death. If I was a parent, I'd rather not be googling and explaining that on the fly - it's either inappropriate for the audience, or it just needs the guardrails for sensitive delivery. I lean toward the latter given we're a society too often afraid to talk about death and engage with the dying. show less

this is very inspiring. i only knew of a handful of these women, and while there is a lot more to learn about each of them, this is an excellent start. i'm sure i missed a great deal by listening to the audio and not seeing the illustrations, but the content was great.

i was especially moved by josephine baker, who i'd heard of as an entertainer but never knew for what she should be known for (activism, fighting nazis - she totally charmed them, even as a black woman!).

i also can't believe i show more didn't know - wasn't taught, at photography school for fuck's sake (although maybe i forgot?) - that robert capa was the alias of a man and woman photography team, making gerda taro one of the first female war photographers. show less
I did quite enjoy this book, especially how a lot of the entries are from more modern women, as in they lived within the last 300 years. There were lots of women I didn't know in addition to the more famous ones I did know, and I was surprised at some of the actually modern (as in still living or recently deceased) women who were included. I'm not sure I've seen many other books of this type include so many living women, so that was a nice inclusion. I also loved how each woman got a show more full-page artwork, even though I feel some of the artwork isn't as flattering as others are. This is definitely a great book for young kids, so parents, check it out! show less
