Brighton Longfield is the victim of theft. Someone has broken into her house and stolen a precious protection amulet. Ok, so it’s not hard to figure out who did it since the thief left a not very nice note and signed her name, Langoria Skeenbauer. Damn, that’s ballsy. Brighton reports the theft and shows the hottie sheriff the note, but he’s not buying it since Langoria is a well-respected member of the community. Boy, is he blind or what? Anyway, Brighton show more publicly confronts Langoria about her dastardly deed, so, of course the witch (yep, she’s a real witch) ends up dead later with Brighton the prime suspect. Except, well-respected or not, there’s a long list of people who disliked her. Maybe even enough to kill her. Brighton needs to find the killer before she’s the one doing the time for a crime she didn’t commit.
This is a cozy paranormal mystery with twists and turns that will have your head spinning. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Brighton and her familiar Meri are a kick and there’s a bit of romance in the air tossed into the mix. Brighton’s partner in crime, I mean, sleuthing, is Annika Skeenbauer, so at least she has a friend amongst the family enemies. Of which there are apparently quite a lot. I’m not sure how I feel about Remy, another Skeenbauer. He seemed great in the 1st book, but in this one he’s weird. Not sure what’s going on with him. I’m enjoying this series and will continue on with book 3. show less

Brighton has inherited Hangman’s House from her great-aunt. A great-aunt she had no idea was a witch. And now Brighton has discovered she is one, too. It’s all new to her. Being a new witch in a town thick with witches who’ve known they were witches their whole life is weird. And stressful. But not as stressful as having to babysit a ghost hunting crew from some internet show. The city Council has deemed that Brighton is the best candidate to keep them show more from discovering all of the supernatural stuff that happens in Coventry because she’s new to town and, well, she doesn’t have a job. Unfortunately, one of the crew is hanged right outside Hangman’s House and now the rest of the crew is convinced there’s freaky shit going down in town.
Brighton needs to find out right quick and in a hurry who actually killed the crewman because she knows it wasn’t supernaturally done and he sure as shit didn’t hang himself. With the help of her boyfriend Thorn, who also happens to be the Sheriff, Brighton and her friends get to work solving the dastardly murder. Well, I’d think most murders are dastardly so that’s a bit dramatic even for me.
Anyway, this is a decent cozy murder mystery with a side order of romance and serious angst thrown in for good measure. The characters are interesting even if the murder is kinda…not. I’m enjoying this series so far and this is a decent addition to it. show less

Brighton is a witch though that’s a recent discovery. She lives in a magical house. Also a recent discovery. She’s found a dead body. Again. Ok, this part is getting to be a regular thing for Brighton. She’s dating the Sheriff, but even if she weren’t she’s still curious enough to want to solve this poor woman’s murder. However, she never thought in a million years her own brother would be a suspect. She needs to find the real killer and quick before show more her brother gets locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. Or did he?
This is still a quirky fun series and this one is a great addition to while away an afternoon. Or evening. Or morning. Yeah, I know it’s a murder, but it’s a cozy so it isn’t gruesome or anything and there’s eye candy and humor to lighten it up. Also, a talking cat. Did I mention that? My one beef is the editing. It’s starting to get sloppy. The killer from the previous book has a different name than in this book. How do you fuck up something like that when it’s the very next book? There are some other editing issues that are minor, but that one pissed me off. Anyway, other than that it’s a decent read. I mentioned the talking smartass cat, right? show less

I love books, but I tend to fall into ruts where I'm reading the same genre or two for months. And then I get to the day where I need something different. I usually go looking for a new-to-me author to jump into a series that bumps me out of my genre rut. That's how I found Sara Bourgeois' books....I wanted to try something different. And I'm so glad I did. This series is just FUN to read! I like the characters. The plots are interesting and entertaining. And, I like the mix of mystery, show more paranormal and humor. Plus, the audio books are short enough that I've been able to binge listen up to book four in a week. There are new books coming out -- and I want to start reading on release day! Then I don't fall victim to spoilers like I did with the earlier books in this series. (An author, of all people should know better than to post a huge plot spoiler in a review! I accidentally read it while posting my review for a book I had just finished. So annoying!)
A Clean Sweep is Book 4 in the Wicked Witches of Coventry series. Ghost hunters are in town to investigate. Brighton, Remy and the gang are called upon by the city to escort the ghost hunters around town (and to make sure they don't catch any video footage or EVPs that give away Coventry's hidden secrets). But (of course) things go wrong. Very wrong. Murderously wrong.....
I listened to the audio book version of this story. At 3.5 hours, the audio is a nice, quick listening length. I enjoyed listening on my commutes, while doing household chores after work, etc. Rebecca Mitchell does a great job of narrating. She has a pleasant voice and reads at a perfect pace. Not too slow....and not too fast. She rings the characters to life....even the snarky kitty cat familiar. :)
Fun series! Moving on to Book 5....Panic Broom. This is the last of the series that I could find on audio, so will have to move through the rest of the series at a slower pace. I can only read print/ebooks in the evening or on weekends, but I'm definitely going to keep reading! And there is a spin-off series, Familiar Kitten Mysteries, that I'm really looking forward to reading! show less
