Short biography
2016 RWA Golden Heart® Finalist Layla Reyne was raised in North Carolina but now calls San Francisco home. She enjoys weaving her bi-coastal experiences into her stories, along with adrenaline-fueled suspense and heart-pounding romance. When she's not writing stories to excite her readers, she downloads too many books, watches too much television, and cooks too much food with her scientist husband, much to the delight of their smushed-face, leftover-loving dogs.

Marsh and Levi’s story was immediately captivating ...and I'm already hoping to find book 2 or the audio. This story contained the perfect mix of action, suspense, with wonderful, likeable characters, a marriage of convenience which I was happy to see turned out to be so much more. Both Levi and Marsh are determined not to fall for each other yet still to be totally failing at it. Levi is still in love with his late wife, the mother of his son, David. It said something special about Levi's show more character as a human being that she’s very much not forgotten by either himself or David. The suspense plot really drives this story, yet there are wonderful moments between Levi and Marsh too. They're getting to know each other, but they don't forget what their job is or why they are together. They’re both very good at those jobs...but they are and have been for a long time in love with each other...and now they are legally married as a cover for their jobs... but their hearts are saying it's so much more. Levi’s family was wonderful and the growing friendship between David and Marsh was perfect. Both men bring a strong network of friends with them, and that factors into the story as well. The way the author worked the chess theme that started with games between Marsh and David, and then grows into a dangerous threat was clever. The action is tense and realistic, and the danger feels very real, and the narrator, Christian Leatherman, did a fantastic job with the voices. The story would have received 5 stars, but it lost a half-star because I felt the ending was a just bit too abrupt. I know it was to encourage us to buy, borrow or steal, the second installment...and it worked...at least for me:) show less

Atlas and the Traitor brings a satisfying conclusion to a unique series, delivering a rich tapestry of history and lore. To fully appreciate the intricate plot and character arcs, it's highly recommended to read the preceding two books first, as they lay the groundwork for the significant payoff in this final installment and the journeys of the two main characters. This book stands out as a superb example of contemporary fantasy, pushing past typical apocalyptic series tropes with a fresh show more and inventive approach.
The narrative is a relentless ride, though the initial section takes its time to tie up loose ends, presented through Atlas's perspective. The pacing feels just right, especially in the latter half, building to a major revelation that prompts a shift in viewpoint for Part 2. The author masterfully incorporates numerous revelations and twists, ensuring the story remains captivating and keeps the reader guessing. Every element feels intentionally placed, weaving together a complex tapestry of Nature and Chaos that has been developing throughout the series.
At its heart, this book is a true enemies-to-lovers romance. While some foundational elements are laid in previous books, this installment truly sees the protagonists begin their transition from adversaries. Despite their initial animosity, their bond evolves into a compelling push-pull dynamic. They've weathered countless storms, fallen, and even with the added element of fated mates, they continue to choose each other. The author skillfully balances their opposing personalities, demonstrating how their differences create a powerful attraction and a deep understanding of each other's needs. The dynamic between Atlas and Robin is a central element, truly making the series shine.
The author excels at crafting delightful banter and intense interactions between the characters, creating a palpable sense of danger and intrigue without ever feeling forced or predictable. The slow, gradual shift in Robin's understanding of Atlas, and Atlas's subsequent reveal of his true nature, are handled with grace, showcasing the complexities of their evolving relationship.
Of course, the journey is not without its bumps, featuring heartbreaking betrayals and losses that keep the reader on edge, driving the narrative towards an inevitable confrontation. One minor point for the reviewer was the feeling that there was more time given than truly needed at points, but ultimately, this did not detract from the overall enjoyment. The balance of pacing, revealing information at just the right time, and weaving together seemingly disparate elements is expertly managed, making for a truly satisfying read.
As the final book in the series, it effectively addresses all lingering questions and sets a clear path for the future of this world. It tackles the significant conflict between Chaos and Nature, leading to a long-awaited peace. The potential for future stories is evident, with new elements like a police presence in Paris and the emergence of a new group opening doors for further paranormal investigation.

DNF, did not finish and should've stopped sooner than just past 60%. But after a long-awaited scene ended up full of cliches, and then yet another annoying plot roadblock, I was done. What should have been escalation was just...stupid. I get the impression the author needed more editorial help than she got. (There's also more telling what a character feels than showing, when showing would deliver real emotional punches.)

Sometimes these things happen because of deadlines, but it's a shame for show more the end of a trilogy.

I know many readers posted better reviews, and all I can say is maybe they should learn about the sunk cost fallacy. I read reviews to get hints about a book. Glowing reviews of this one tell me they're not critical enough to serve my needs. I give this one star for the attempt, and another because I like these characters. But it's all I can honestly give.

I’m still oscillating between a 3.5 or 4, but rounding up for now.

After the super fun trilogy that was Trouble Brewing, I was hoping the author would write a spinoff about some of my favorite characters, but instead we got this brand new series starter featuring assassins. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting and I still dont know what I’m feeling at the end.

Hawes is the titular character, the Prince of Killers and head of an organization of vigilante assassins. Despite his activities, show more he really is a loyal and kind man who loves his family and his city, and just wants to build a legacy that will keep the innocent people safe. I loved his interactions with his family, their love and banter is on point and pretty entertaining, even during daunting times. Dante on the other hand is an enigma - despite his assertions that he wanted to help Hawes, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. We also don’t get his POV, so I felt like I didn’t get to know him well enough; just that he has ulterior motives. There is obviously very interesting chemistry between the two right from the beginning and I can see the potential for explosive times, but we only got a glimpse of it this time. I thought both the characters of Holt and Helena were fascinating and very much in contrast to Hawes, and that makes them a pretty cool trio. I love how they always stuck together and I appreciated that family dynamic.

Layla Reyne writes very fast paced novels and this was no different. I flew through the book in just a few hours and never wanted to put it down. There is betrayal in the air right from page one and the author made sure to sustain that suspense for me throughout. I really couldn’t guess the identity of the traitor and that was a nice shock. The story takes place almost in the span of a week, so I liked how the author showed the possibility for more for the couple and didn’t veer into instalove territory. It was all going fine until that monster of a cliffhanger that made my jaw drop and I don’t even know what to do now anymore. Wow was that a brutal last line.

Finally, I just wanna say that this was a fun and entertaining novel, definitely more in the suspense category rather than the romance. If you enjoy books with antiheroes, vigilante assassins and kickass siblings, then this book is for you. There is a lot of suspense going on here that’ll keep you guessing. But be prepared for a completely unexpected cliffhanger at the end that will blindside you. I’m still reeling from the shock and can’t wait for the sequel.
