This book is a Holocaust survivor's narrative and is written for a young audience. I'd say it might be a good first Holocaust book because the details aren't too horrific. The writing in this book is simplistic and not overly descriptive. I've certainly read better middle grade books on the subject, but since it is written by the survivor herself, it cannot be overlooked. Also there is a very moving message at the end from Bronia Brandman about her reason for writing her story. My students show more seemed to enjoy it and learned a lot and that's what matters in the end. show less
This book was an excellent cross between autobiography and historical reference. The author explored her father's journey from Holland to America as an immigrant. Between the details of describing the horrors of a war torn country from which her father came, she describes the processes and the hope that Ellis Island symbolized for many foreigners. She also describes the hardships that often presented themselves while people were on the brink of hope at Ellis Island. I think this book, with show more its references to timely post cards and photographs, makes a good social studies reference. I believe that its contents could serve as a catalyst for researching more about Ellis Island. show less
