About the Author

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was the consummate idealist, crusading for noble causes all over Europe, but maintaining his sympathy for human failings. Bjørnson's tales of country life were a romantic attempt to capture the Norwegian national character in literature. They were vastly popular in the show more United States among homesick Norwegian immigrants. When the Modern Breakthrough arrived, Bjørnson began energetically composing plays of social relevance. Although less widely read today, Bjørnson remains a significant figure in Norwegian literary history. Bjørnson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903. Bjørnson died in 1910. Have you ever heard of Björnsterne Björnson? (Yepp, if you're a norwegian, you doesn't count now! :) ) Me neither. It's not something to be proud of because he was one of the greatest norwegian writer and the writer of the norwegian national anthem. This volume published in the Nobel prize winner series consists two of his early 'peasant' short novels. It's entirely my fault, that I don't like these rural stories, so if it's your cup of tea, you'll enjoy them most probably.
I actually quite liked this small play by Bjørnson. It had some great lines and the dramatic tension brought everything to a close quite nicely and efficiently. Overall, I think for those interested in Norwegian literature, classics, plays, and Nobel laureates should check this out. It is worth doing so.

3.25 stars.
I'm surprised that no one has added this to their libraries on here. This intimate country life, as the title suggests- a sketch, is a rendering journey of Arne, from his childhood to where the passage of the story inevitably takes him. It was fairly well done, if written a little tersely in parts, and I feel that anyone who is interested in Nobel laureates or classics of world literature, or Norwegian literature, should check out. It's worth it.

3.75 stars.
½
Pleasant little tale of Oyvind, son of Norwegian peasant farmers, and his rural young life. From his first childhood encounter with neighbor Marit, through his school years (and the sobering life story of his God fearing teacher)....through his teens (jealousy over Marit..a determination to make something of himself at college) and the eventual happy outcome..
