Jack London (1876–1916)
Author of The Call of the Wild
About the Author
One of the pioneers of 20th century American literature, Jack London specialized in tales of adventure inspired by his own experiences. London was born in San Francisco in 1876. At 14, he quit school and became an "oyster pirate," robbing oyster beds to sell his booty to the bars and restaurants in show more Oakland. Later, he turned on his pirate associates and joined the local Fish Patrol, resulting in some hair-raising waterfront battles. Other youthful activities included sailing on a seal-hunting ship, traveling the United States as a railroad tramp, a jail term for vagrancy and a hazardous winter in the Klondike during the 1897 gold rush. Those experiences converted him to socialism, as he educated himself through prolific reading and began to write fiction. After a struggling apprenticeship, London hit literary paydirt by combining memories of his adventures with Darwinian and Spencerian evolutionary theory, the Nietzchean concept of the "superman" and a Kipling-influenced narrative style. "The Son of the Wolf"(1900) was his first popular success, followed by 'The Call of the Wild" (1903), "The Sea-Wolf" (1904) and "White Fang" (1906). He also wrote nonfiction, including reportage of the Russo-Japanese War and Mexican revolution, as well as "The Cruise of the Snark" (1911), an account of an eventful South Pacific sea voyage with his wife, Charmian, and a rather motley crew. London's body broke down prematurely from his rugged lifestyle and hard drinking, and he died of uremic poisoning - possibly helped along by a morphine overdose - at his California ranch in 1916. Though his massive output is uneven, his best works - particularly "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang" - have endured because of their rich subject matter and vigorous prose. - John Griffith London (born John Griffith Chaney; January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer in the world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first writers to become a worldwide celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.
His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay", and "The Heathen".
London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, socialism, and eugenics. He wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam. - Cause of death

This short story is dark but wonderful. Written in 1912, it has its place in early dystopian stories, and one with plausible science behind it. Jack London imagines a future in which an incredibly deadly plague hits mankind in 2013, and has the events told in retrospect sixty years later by one of the few survivors in the San Francisco Bay Area to his grandkids. Aside from how early it was written, what makes the story special is how realistic it seems. One example of this during the plague show more is people’s behavior, e.g. the lawlessness, violence, and occasional acts of sacrifice; another is in how much the modern world would depend on infrastructure and the rapid communication of news, which when lost would quickly isolate people.
London’s predictions of world population growth before his plague hits are pretty accurate; he imagines 8 billion by 2010, and the reality ended up around 7 billion by then. He also eerily describes an outbreak of a disease that sounds like polio - in his book it arises in 1947 and is eradicated by 1958; in reality the first large epidemic was in 1916, and Salk’s vaccine was having a dramatic effect by 1955-7.
Most interesting to me, though, was that before the plague, London has the control of both the United States and the world in the hands of oligarchies of the ultra-wealthy, which in some countries is openly true today, and in others, dangerously close to being true. It’s fascinating that he has such pessimism of how democracy would play out, with Morgan the Fifth appointed President by the Board of Magnates, a group of a dozen men who rule the country. Society is heavily stratified, with the powerful owning the land, machines, and everything else, and those who produce food, the ‘food-getters’, their slaves. This comes back to haunt mankind during the onset of the plague: “In the midst of our civilization, down in our slums and labor-ghettos, we had bred a race of barbarians, of savages; and now, in the time of our calamity, they turned upon us like the wild beasts they were and destroyed us.”
Society is so completely devastated, with only about one in a million people surviving, and so knowledge is quickly lost. It’s chilling to me that the grandchildren listening to the tales of the past are not only uneducated, but they scorn concepts like germs you can’t see, and man’s history. While life continues on and London foresees man eventually rebuilding his world, he also sees an inevitable cycle, which seems to me one of the darkest possible apocalyptic thoughts.
Just this quotes, along those same lines, from the introduction by Matthew Battles:
“London’s vision of these cycles evokes the philosophy of history of eighteenth-century thinker Giambattista Vico, whose time saw the ascendancy of science, the beginnings of ostensibly benevolent, bureaucratic monarchies, and the end of religious warfare in Europe. But to Vico, these hallmarks of progress were already harbingers of a fall; the glories of civilization were also the seeds of an overweening pride that would bring us to the brink of tragic choices. Vico saw history as a system powered by our paradoxical drives: to poetry and reflection on the one hand, and ‘ferocity, avarice, and ambition’ on the other. These opposed regimes act through society to produce history that cycles from primitive savagery to barbarian society to the majesty of civilization – and back, again and again.” show less

What if you were handed a pamphlet by a socialist political protester, but instead of a bullet point list of the ways in capitalism is a scourge on both society and average wage worker, those bullet points were transformed in to a very bare bones novella where characters serve for the to speak the bullet point at you. Perhaps one of the most didactic novels I've ever read, it serves as a display of London's personal view on the political system that he saw progressing in to the future. show more A warning against a capitalist oligarchy that crushes all labor unions and makes the rich even richer off their backs.
Whether or not you agree with the socialist values that are outlined by the characters, what makes The Iron Heel such an undying work is that it pretty accurately described the late stage capitalism that we are now experiencing in 2025. I think your enjoyment of the work hinge largely on your sympathy these socialist values, because if you don't there's really no redeeming quality to most of the exposition. In a way it's similar to Ayn Rand's work in that way, though it's my opinion that London more accurately describes current conditions and the threats that face us.
Creatively, yes, it isn't the most inventive work ever. Too much of the prose is caught up with serving as an agitprop, but there were a few highlights I thought worthy of mention. The framing device, that of a lost diary that is annotated by a publisher from a future socialist utopia, provides at least something to bite on to. Reminded me a lot of the similar device used in City, where it wasn't really necessary, but did add some amount of flavor that I ended up appreciating. Second, London's writing is solid throughout the novel, but he really starts to flex his muscles towards the end of the book when he described a failed revolution attempt in Chicago, and it's a brutal, bloody, and crushing vision that he sees. London's language here is really strong, and I wished there had been more of style included. Really, these creative flashes are glimpses at a much better novel that London never made, something perhaps more closely akin to 1984.
Nevertheless, The Iron Heel is important if for nothing else than as a proto-dytopia that was used by subsequent and superior works, and perhaps without it those works wouldn't exist in the way they do now. show less

A compelling but limited exercise of imagination, Jack London's short novel Before Adam sees a modern man plagued by dreams which appear to be the residual genetic/ancestral memory of his pre-human ape-like ancestor Big Tooth. Through this literary set-up, London tells us this caveman's story.
It is as you would expect from London, the author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang: Big Tooth's world is a brutal one, in which a violent death is the natural order of things. In fact, Before Adam show more was closer to his two famous dog/wolf stories than I expected; Big Tooth is more animal than man. This caveman and his tribe have not discovered fire, nor coherent speech (the lack of dialogue makes this short book slower than it appears). This is a shame, as the book's best moments come when Big Tooth and his companions show whispers of the humans their descendants will one day become: fire, tools, boats, love, companionship, co-operation and social structure. The animalistic stuff has been done better in London's other books.
Nevertheless, few write more concisely or perceptively about nature and 'the law of tooth and fang' than London, and it is fascinating to follow his primordial characters through their adventure. Despite some disappointments to the book (the story ends rather lamely, and there is the afore-mentioned prioritisation of more animalistic than human traits), Before Adam is a worthwhile obscure read from an author who was prolific in his day but is now known solely for a handful of stories. There is an odd feeling that comes from contemplating our caveman past, something that is part of us just "as my father and my grandfather are parts of me less remote" (pg. 12), and London captures it. show less

Another one of those books that seems to have gotten past me in my school days, I just recently read The Call of the Wild for the first time. Like many of these books that I'm discovering pretty much everyone else has read except me, I think I'm glad that I came at them as an adult, as I don't think I would have revisited them had I read them earlier, and I don't think I would have taken away as much when I was younger. Jack London's story about Buck, a St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd who is show more kidnapped from his idyllic southern California home to be a sled dog in the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush is a powerful tale. We follow Buck's journey as he discovers that not all men are kind like his previous owners, learns to navigate the ins and outs of the sled dog's pack pecking order, and finally as he discovers the primal nature of his being as he eventually starts to venture out into the wilderness on his own. The imagery that London uses in describing Buck's discovery of that primal nature is remarkable; I think of anything else in the book, I enjoyed these sequences best. show less
