Whenever I visited the Modern Tate Gallery in London I always found some time to sit in the room, which contains Rothko's Seagram murals. The subdued lighting enhances the dream like feeling of staring into these wonderful abstract paintings.
Mark Rothko 1903-1970 Des tableaux comme des dramas is a biography and critique of the artist and his work. His huge abstract canvases are well known, but I was surprised to discover his earlier work, his portraits, street and metro paintings and his show more mythological pictures. This is a Le Monde publication and is informative and full of reproductions of Rothko's work. As an introduction it is very good indeed and so 5 stars.
There is a retrospect at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris opened recently, which I hope to get to soon. show less
