If you're pissed about the Catholic Church sexual abuse cases, Aaron and Guera provide a cathartic "biblical-noir" tale about two girls who are being groomed at a nunnery as the child brides for angels above but who decide to run and -- when cornered -- fight like all goddamn. It's a bloody and brutal tale of friendship, love, and perseverance. And revenge. A goddamn arkful of revenge.

So, I'm just going to paste the following review to Volumes 5 through 8.

If there's anything good about this enforced COVID social abandonment experiment we're all in the middle of as I type this (almost into week five), it's the ability to binge read a series of graphic novels like one would normally binge a Netflix series.

And this feels like a Netflix series. This is the darkest parts of Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul, but set on a dying Native American reservation, where everyone is show more stretched to their limit, doing the most horrible things to just get through the day. There's a corrosive bleakness and despair that runs through every page, and even when Aaron and company let a little light in, it's only so he can slam the door shut and cast the reader into an even more depressing darkness.

These are probably the most real characters I've ever read in a graphic novel series. I'm invested in every one of them, and I'm desperate for someone to find some hope to cling to before this all wraps up, but I really doubt that's going to happen.

So happy there is more Thor! And OH MY GOD this volume. Holy shit.

This picks up where Volume 2 of Thor ended, with Roxxon and the dark elves invading Alfheim and basically committing genocide. Meanwhile on Asgard, Odin has become more dictatorial and imprisoned Freya.

Jane-as-Thor really lets Jane shine, and gives her a much stronger character than she has in the past. The fact that her becoming Thor undoes all the good chemotherapy does to her human body is heart-breaking, and eventually show more the writers are going to have to deal with that.

Wow. I was hoping for entertaining, but I think Jason Aaron has done something even better with Conan, that not many of the previous versions I've read (and I've read many) have done...

Conan gets some depth.

Don't get me wrong, Conan the drunk, the brawler, the womanizer...I mean, this is the very foundation of the character. But to now bounce around from his teen years to his time as King, and to see the weight of all his years and experience fall squarely on his shoulders and aching show more back...

This series is absolutely brilliant. The stories, the insights, and, of course, the art. All entwine to give us a deeper glimpse into a character and level him up from entertaining to downright interesting. show less
