I thoroughly enjoy anything from Paul Stamets. I have been avidly studying mushrooms for almost 20 years, but never really delved into the world of psilocybins. The amount of knowledge this man has just blows me away, and I hang on to every word he writes. This is definitely one resource book I will be referring back to for many years to come.
This work was too complicated for my needs -- his instructions for clean rooms and moisture regulation would be valuable if I was running a cultivation business, but for home-scale backyard food production in a garden bed or on logs, I would recommend his work "Mycelium Running" instead.
This has to be the best general level book about growing mushrooms. If you want to start, or already have some experience in growing them, this is a must. First it gives advice about mushroom growing in general, and then introduces most of the fungi that are grown commercially or at home.
If you are interested in growing mushrooms, I recommend this warmly.
A thin booklet, which still has room for 18 pages of scientific references in small font. The introduction is the main text, closing with a few tables summarizing studied health effects of different fungal species. The main portion of the book is a summary discussion of 17 species, providing distribution & natural habitat, known active constituents, form used, medicinal properties, and Stamet's comments. The final chapter is Frequently Asked Questions, which may be the point at which another show more reviewer started thinking these were being touted as a cure-all. Just use your own judgement.
A good handy reference, before you use mushrooms medicinally.
