The Zuni Man-Woman focuses on the life of We'wha (1849-96), the Zuni who was perhaps the most famous berdache (an individual who combined the work and traits of both men and women) in American Indian history. Through We'wha's exceptional life, Will Roscoe creates a vivid picture of an alternative gender role whose history has been hidden and almost forgotten.

"An important book that will bring to the field a better understanding of the role of the berdache in Pueblo culture."--John Adair, San show more Francisco State University Source: Publisher show less
Fascinating study of homosexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. Clearly shows up those who claim homosexuality is unAfrican.

Interesting consideration of different types of homosexuality: those based on old/young, those where one partner adopts a life usually identified with the other sex, and those where there is an element of equality. Also interesting as marriage tends to be viewed as compulsory therefore an element of bisexuailty is required.
Even zorgvuldig onderzoek als Williams' "The Spirit and the Flesh" en met dezelfde achilleshiel bezwaard: ook Will Roscoe zoekt vaak holebiseksualiteit en durft gendervariatie uit het oog verliezen - An antropological study as thorough as Williams "The Spirit and the Flesh" and with the same weakness: Will Roscoe seeks and thus finds gay identity and fails to see the whole scope of gender variance
