- Ouida Sebestyen, nee Dockery, was born February 13, 1924, in Vernon, TX. She married Adam Sebestyen in 1960 and had one son. She attended the U. of Colorado. She began writing at age eighteen, but did not publish her first book, Words by Heart until 1979. Part of this novel had originally appeared as a short story in the magazine 'Ingenue' in 1968. The book was well received, and Ms. Sebestyen has continued to write fiction for young adults. She draws her inspiration, and often her setting, from the American West, especially its contrasting harshness and beauty, and the demands it places upon an individual's survival. While not all her novels are set in a sharply defined Western setting, throughout all of her books she focuses on characterization and detail, with an emphasis on human emotions and development. Her work is noted for its honesty and provacative story lines that do not always provide a conventional happy ending. Did nobody else on GR see the clues that maybe the girl was making this up, locked inside her room, or maybe inside her own mind, maybe catatonic. Maybe sorta like [b:Me & Emma|80534|Me & Emma|Elizabeth Flock|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388360733l/80534._SY75_.jpg|600345].
Whatever really happened, and whatever really happens after the last page, doesn't matter. The story is about the friendships, and about this girl with the amazing ability to tell show more stories, and the ambiguity of it all. And it's brilliant. show less

The girl in a box... I still can't remember why I picked it up at a school book fair, but I can remember the emotions that flowed off the page. This book does leave you in an emotional wreck at the fate of the girl. Does she die? did she live? It's a question that's never answered, but reading this girl's story gripped me from the very first line.
A brilliant read and a book that stays with you long after you've finished.

Though it is 1912, Lena has been raised in a sheltered environment without knowledge of racial hatred. Now Lena's family has moved to Texas where slavery was never an issue and Lena goes to school with the local children, but when she wins a contest quoting the most Bible verses she realizes the jealousies that begin to show in the community can be tinged with real fear. Her father's work ethic shows up a local white share cropper and Lena's innocence is destroyed, but her father's ability show more to forgive and see the good in people even as they do harm is her biggest life lesson. show less
