- Short biography
- Tibor Gergely (1900-1978) was an artist best known for his work in several popular children's books. Born in Budapest in 1900, he studied art briefly in Vienna before emigrating to the United States in 1939, where he settled in New York City. Largely a self-taught artist, he also contributed several covers of The New Yorker, mostly during the 1940s. Among the most popular children's books Gergely illustrated are The Happy Man and His Dump Truck, Busy Day Busy People, The Little Red Caboose, The Fire Engine Book, Tootle, and Scuffy the Tugboat. Many (70!) of his better known books were published by Little Golden Books. His best work is collected in "The Great Big Book of Bedtime Stories." Gergely died in 1978, in New York.
As of 2001, Tootle was the all-time third best-selling hardcover children's book in English, and Scuffy the Tugboat was the eighth all-time bestseller. Source: Amazon - Nationality

This came out eight years before I was born and thus a decade speaking broadly before my own "what do people do in the town? Mr. McGregor is opening his store" salad days, and what I think is most interesting about it in these post-HAL, post-hoverboard days of 2015 is the weird small differences between then and now. The nurses wear starched caps and dresses! The "firemen" are not "firefighters"! The butcher receives a a place of weird prominence in this kid version of the real economy! Etc.
I LOVE Little Golden Books. This is that great book for kids that love fire trucks or firefighters. Great written sounds too, like CLANG and the SSSSSS of water. Not sure when students start learning about onomatopoeia, but if the interest level matches up with this, it could be a cute lesson.

The illustrations in this book are a bit lacking in quality, i.e. each fireman essentially has the same face; however, the simple story and subject matter are captivating to my young son.
Very nice collection that includes *unabridged* copies of such stories as Mister Dog (aka Crispin's Crispian) by Margaret Wise Brown and Garth Williams, The Golden Egg Book by Brown and Leonard Weisgard, and four stories illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren. ?áUnfortunately it does not have Color Kittens... I'd still like to read a complete edition of that.
