An account of the Byzantine empire following the fall of the Roman Empire. This is a not particularly interesting period of history to me, but the Time-Life editors do as good a job making it accessible and intriguing as anybody could. From 324 to 1453 and the besieging of Constantinople by the Turks.
The Philokalia: The Complete Text (Vol. 1); Compiled by St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain and St. Markarios of Corinth by G. E. H. Palmer
As the back of the book says, the Philokalia is the most important book other than the Bible for Orthodox Christians, and it is truly amazing. The glossary at the back of this book helps a lot, and contains explanations of many very important Orthodox beliefs and terms. The only complaint I have is that I wish the translators and editors would have included St. Nikodimos' comments on the various writings he compiled within this English edition. It seems that they would have been very helpful show more and retaining them would have remained true to the original compilation by Ss. Nikodimos and Markarios. show less
found this very boring. new king, war, new king. the art is not my favourite. the MONKS were the most interesting!
The history of Byzantine Art. Copiously illustrated.
