Highlights for Children

I am sad that this is the only Goofus and Gallant book out there. I looked on Amazon to see if perhaps there was a collection of all the G and G that had ever been published in Highlights, and the only thing I could find was this slim little number.

It would be absolutely fantastic if Highlights could do a collection of all the G and G that were ever published, or at least do collection books by decade or so. Some comic strips have been collected in such a format, organized by year or decade show more or story arcs - you can find such volumes for Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, for Better or Worse, and so on and so forth.

Yeah, G and G wasn't the standard comic strip, but G and G had always been my favorite feature of the Highlights magazines when I was reading them as a kid, Goofus's dumbassery could make me laugh at times. You can find some G and G strips via Google search, and compare the art styles and how aged some of them are, but it'd be great to see an actual comprehensive collection of that dumbass and his much more thoughtful peer. show less

.This was so entertaining to me as a kid! I read it at least twice, back then. I was curious about what I'd think of it as an adult. I'm not the intended audience. Kids nowadays will probably still love it, though. It's a mix of contemporary (as of the 90s) teens going through silly things, and fantasy-inspired little fables. I was glad I got ahold of it now, and reading it once is enough.

This book is great fun to puzzle over. There are 36 puzzles, each puzzle had one Imposter and 12 smaller things to look for. Ex. There is a page with sunflowers, and your mission is to find the 1 daffodil and 12 bees. The illustrations on each of the pages are cute and engaging. This book is a challenge but was a real winner with my 9-year-old friends. It's a great way to occupy some time.

I struggled to pick which magazine for youth to review. I wanted to choose a magazine for teens, but I couldn't settle on a popular title (not much is moving on my shelves). Finally, I ended up choosing Highlights because I order it for my own children and they really like it. The more I study it, the more I appreciate the design that goes in to it. The magazine moves quickly from one activity to another to keep short attention spans. The Hidden Picture Puzzles and Find What is Silly pages show more are very popular in my house. I'm happy to see my pre-school age son flipping through the magazine by himself in terms of building early literacy skills. My only complaint is the American bias in terms of the focus on Spanish, American money, etc. show less
