Splash! is an adorable counting book that shows photographs of Adelie penguins. The book starts at one with a baby penguin waking up. Next comes two with a photograph of a mother penguin feeding a baby penguin and the sentence, "It's time to eat." Each number through ten corresponds with a photograph showing that many penguins in their everyday life. I assumed this book was more about counting when I saw the cover but it provides more information than expected about Adelie penguins and where show more they live and how they interact with each other. The photographs are excellent and the sentences are easy to read. I used this book with my kindergarten boys when we explored the Arctic Ocean during our ocean theme. They loved seeing pictures of the penguins and discussing how penguins live in such cold conditions. I would even consider purchasing this book for my toddler nephew who is learning how to count. show less
"Splash!: A Penguin Counting Book" is a picture book that goes through the day in the life of the Adelie penguins while also counting from one to ten using the pictures to demonstrate each number. For example, it starts at one with one baby penguin, then two with a parent penguin and a baby penguin, and so on. This book tells a very cute story and educates the reader on these penguins' lives and counting from one to ten. I would read this with my own pre-kindergarten and kindergarten show more students to introduce them to these two subjects. show less

PENGUINS!

A book where you learn about cute penguins and numbers!

This is a simple counting book for children where they can count and touch each penguin. Large numbers are printed on the book for children to recognize. The numbers go from one to ten with each page have the correct number of penguins matching the increasing numbers. The pictures in the book are photographs of real penguins.

~Can you make a personal connection to math?
Not really. The only connection is for children to show more practicing counting things and matching it to the number.
This is definitely a book for children under the age of 6... any older, and they might grow bored of the book. It does not have a challenge since it is aimed at younger children.

The end of the book does include a bit of humor that I can see kids laughing at.
It asks, "How many penguins do you see?" and it includes a photo of dozens of penguins (possibly a 100 or more) from a bird's eye view. Some kids may be determined to count while others may be overwhelmed.

"Splash!" is a book to help smaller children learn how to count. For example, on the first page there is a big one of the top left part of the page. This means there will be one penguin in the picture. The next page has a big two on the page and has two penguins in the picture. This helps children relate the number 1 or 2 to 1 or 2 penguins. There is also a story to the book, so children are entertained while counting. The story goes in a day or life of a penguin saying what they do through show more out the day. This book can help smaller children learn to count and at the same time teach them about penguins. show less
