Short biography
Cassius Dio, son of Cassius Apronianus, was a Roman senator born at Nicaea in Bithynia. He was held various offices in the Empire, including governor of Smyrna, proconsul of Africa and Pannonia, and was twice Consul. His "Roman History" was written in 80 books, covering approximately 1,400 years, beginning with Aeneas' arrival in Italy and ending with events in 229. Only fragments remain of the first 36 and last 20 books, but most of the middle books are complete, or nearly so (book 55 has a considerable gap).
