For a short (64 page) book, this one packs in the information and photos. My wife and I were enchanted by the pictish stones we saw in Scotland, and spent a couple of days just trying to see how many we could find (and photograph). We probably saw about half of the stones pictured in this book. While this books is not just about the stones, but the history of the picts (at least as near as we can tell given they didn't leave much of a record behind), it has a lot of great photos and show more information on pictish settlements and how they fit in to present day Scotland. This book's a keeper and will probably accompany us on our next visit to Scotland. show less
More than I wanted to know, but the sections I was interested in were well-written and well-illustrated. A good overview, especially if you want to plan a trip to Scottish archaeology sites.
This is an excellent book on the pre-history of Scotland. It includes many photos and site maps to help the reader get a sense of the various sites. See also the August 2014 issue of National Geographic for a nice article and many great photos of these sites.
I bought this book while traveling in Scotland. I had the pleasure of visiting the Orkneys, which are amazing. (Although it was COLD there, even in July). Beautiful islands, and beautiful archeaolgical sites, too.
