As someone studying political history, my general appraisal of the decline is that sociology is merely political science sans politics. However, that is probably due to the general rivalry in the social sciences.
It's not a great textbook, but it gets a job done. Simply, its just not that special or notable in any way, yet it gets the job done. After all, it is a "brief introduction."
