Carr and Tyler trace The Beatles career from 1962 to 1975 as a series of record reviews of Beatles records (singles, EPs and albums) released in the UK.
Written in the biting style of British rock journalism the authors seem prejudiced against George Harrison's music for a start but this is an interesting introduction to Beatles music for those who may be unfamiliar with it (i.e. Martians).
Updated in 1978 and again in 1981.
The first book I ever read about them when I became obsessed, shortly after Lennon died. Still remember little bits of it, like their description of him doing the guitar solo on “You Can’t Do That” (“John, a rawer guitarist altogether…”).
This is a well thought out coffee table book about Jazz. It is aesthetically pleasing and equally informative. It is an easy read and covers its bases well with the information provided. This book offers a good overview of the style.
Having tackled The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in this series, Roy Carr turns his attention to the Thin White Duke assisted by Charles Shaar Murray.
Again the format is record reviews of Bowie's output from his mod days through to the early 80s. A great intro and guide to the sometime bewildering career of rock's great chameleon.
